GM Car A/C Service 4 min read

A refill is the cheapest thing anyone will offer you, and sometimes it is the wrong thing to buy. Here is the published price, what sits inside it, and how to tell whether your car needs gas at all.

What a module means on your bill

A single module means one evaporator, which is the cooling unit behind your dashboard. Most hatchbacks and sedans have one. A double module means a second evaporator feeding the rear vents, which is normal on seven-seaters and on many SUVs.

Two evaporators hold more refrigerant, take longer to evacuate and longer to recharge, and give a leak two more sets of joints to hide in. That is the whole reason for the ₹700 difference. Nobody is charging you extra for the badge on the bonnet.

If you are not sure which you have, look for vents in the roof lining or in the back of the centre console. Rear vents that blow cold air of their own almost always mean a second module.

The leak check is not an extra

Refrigerant is not a consumable. A sealed system that was charged correctly should still be cold three years later. When a car arrives low on gas, something let it out, and the useful question is where.

So the charge is recovered, the system is held under pressure, and the joints, the condenser face, the compressor shaft seal and the evaporator drain are checked before anything goes back in. On a system that has been topped up repeatedly, the leak is usually somewhere obvious that nobody looked for.

We wrote up how the pressure test itself works in nitrogen pressure leak testing for car A/C.

When a refill is the wrong repair

Warm air has several causes and only one of them is answered by gas. A compressor clutch that never engages, a condenser packed with Chennai road grit, a blower running at half speed, a cabin filter that has turned into a mat, a blend door stuck on hot: each of those produces a customer who says the A/C is not cooling.

Charging a system that is already at the right pressure does not help, and overcharging makes the cooling worse rather than better. That is why the checkup comes first and the invoice comes second.

What you pay if the fault is not the gas

The free 30-point A/C and electrical checkup is ₹0 and does not require you to buy anything afterwards. It runs about fifteen minutes and you leave with a written report whatever you decide to do next.

Compressor, condenser and evaporator work is quoted after diagnosis, never before. We do not publish a price for those jobs, because the same symptom on two cars can be a ₹900 relay and a full compressor replacement, and a number printed on a web page would be a guess dressed up as a quote. You get the figure once we know which one it is.

Frequently asked questions

How much is car AC gas filling in Chennai?

A single-module refill is ₹1,500 and a double-module refill is ₹2,200 at GM. Both prices include the leak check. Those are the published rates and they do not change with the make of the car.

How often should car AC gas be topped up?

A sealed A/C system does not consume refrigerant. If the charge is low, it escaped somewhere. A car that needs gas every year has a leak that has not been found, and paying for the refill again is paying for the same fault twice.

Will a gas refill fix an AC that blows warm?

Sometimes. Low charge is one cause of warm air, and it is the cheapest one to rule out. A seized clutch, a blocked condenser, a failed blower or a jammed blend door produce the same complaint and no amount of gas fixes any of them. The free 30-point A/C and electrical checkup tells you which one you have before you spend anything.
