A car that starts after a jump but is flat again the next morning needs testing. Replacing the battery without finding the reason can repeat the problem.
Causes ranked by likelihood
1. Battery at the end of its usable life
Heat, short trips and age reduce a lead-acid battery's ability to hold charge. The starter may crank slowly after the vehicle sits overnight, and the voltage can fall sharply under load. A proper battery test checks resting voltage, load response and charging acceptance; looking only at the date sticker is not enough.
2. Alternator charging below specification
The alternator should restore the battery while the engine runs. 3. Parasitic draw while parked

Interior, boot or glovebox lights, a stuck relay, an infotainment unit that does not sleep, or an accessory charger are common places to look. The correct test measures current after vehicle modules have gone to sleep, then isolates circuits—not guesswork with fuses.
4. Aftermarket accessory or audio wiring
Dash cameras, amplifiers, reverse cameras, alarms and phone chargers can be wired to permanent live power. Poor joints or incorrect grounding can create both a drain and intermittent electrical behaviour. An inspection should identify the accessory circuit clearly rather than disconnecting factory wiring indiscriminately.
5. Corroded terminals or poor earth
Loose battery terminals and corroded earth straps can mimic a dead battery because the starter cannot receive current reliably. They may also prevent the alternator from charging effectively. Cleaning and torque checks are simple but important before condemning a battery or starter.
A useful overnight-drain test sequence
First record battery voltage and load-test result. Next measure charging voltage with the engine running and electrical loads switched on. If both appear normal, allow the car to enter sleep mode and measure parked draw. Then isolate circuits methodically. This sequence protects the vehicle's electronics and gives a documented reason for any repair.
Cost boundaries
A terminal clean or wiring correction may be labour-led. A battery, alternator regulator, alternator assembly or accessory repair depends on the confirmed part and vehicle variant.
