Innova Rear AC Not Cooling? Causes and Fixes

GM Car A/C Service 5 min read

Front vents cold but the middle and third-row vents blowing warm in your Innova or Innova Crysta? Here are the common causes ranked by how often we see them, what a proper diagnosis checks first, and honest repair cost ranges.

Why is only the rear AC weak in an Innova?

The Innova uses a separate rear evaporator and blower fed by the same refrigerant loop. When the front cools but the rear doesn't, the fault is usually specific to the rear circuit — a stuck rear blend/mode door, a blocked rear evaporator or drain, a tired rear blower, or a partial refrigerant shortage that the smaller rear coil feels first. The only way to know which is a proper diagnosis; the causes below are ranked by how often we actually find them.

Common causes, ranked by likelihood

1. Stuck rear blend / mode door (most common)

The rear unit has its own air-mix door driven by an actuator. If that door sticks toward the heater path or the actuator fails, the rear vents blow cabin-temperature or warm air even though the compressor is working fine. It usually shows up as rear cooling that never gets cold regardless of fan speed. Diagnosis is by actuator response and vent-temperature checks; repair is an actuator or linkage fix rather than anything to do with gas.

2. Blocked rear evaporator or clogged drain

Dust, and in older Innovas a partly iced or fouled rear evaporator, chokes airflow and cooling at the rear. A blocked rear drain can also let the coil stay damp and musty. This shows as weak, sometimes smelly rear airflow. A rear evaporator clean and drain flush restores it in most cases.

3. Low or uneven refrigerant charge

Because the rear coil is smaller and further down the loop, a partial gas shortage or a slow leak often shows at the rear first while the front still feels acceptable. We confirm this on gauges — never by topping up blindly. If gas is low, the leak is found and fixed before recharging; a refill without a leak check just fails again.

4. Weak rear blower motor or resistor

If rear airflow is weak at every speed, or only works on the highest setting, the rear blower motor or its speed resistor is the usual suspect — not the cooling side at all. This is an electrical/mechanical part replacement.

5. Dirty cabin filter (quick, cheap first check)

A choked cabin filter starves both front and rear airflow. It's the cheapest thing to rule out and worth checking before anything else, especially in dusty Chennai driving.

What a proper diagnosis checks

At GM we measure front and rear vent temperatures separately, read high/low side pressures on gauges, test rear blower operation across all speeds, inspect the cabin filter and rear evaporator area, and confirm the rear blend actuator responds. Only then do we tell you which of the causes above applies and quote the exact work. That order matters — replacing a compressor when the real fault is a stuck actuator is exactly the kind of over-billing diagnosis-first service avoids.

Honest cost ranges (Chennai)

Actual price depends on your Innova's year and the confirmed fault, so we quote after diagnosis. As a guide: cabin filter replacement is a low-cost consumable job; a rear evaporator clean and drain flush is a modest labour job; a rear blend actuator or blower motor is a part-plus-labour job that varies by part price; and A/C gas filling with a leak check is ₹1,500 for a single module or ₹2,200 for a double module. We confirm the estimate before starting any approved work.

Frequently Asked Questions — Innova Rear AC

Why is my Innova front AC cold but the rear warm?

The Innova has a separate rear evaporator and blower on the same refrigerant loop. When the front is cold and only the rear is warm, the fault is usually in the rear circuit — most often a stuck rear blend/mode actuator, a blocked rear evaporator, a weak rear blower, or a partial gas shortage the smaller rear coil feels first. A diagnosis confirms which.

Does low gas cause only the rear AC to stop cooling?

It can. Because the rear coil is smaller and further along the loop, a partial refrigerant shortage often shows at the rear first while the front still feels acceptable. We confirm on gauges and, if gas is low, find and fix the leak before recharging — a blind top-up just fails again.

How much does Innova rear AC repair cost in Chennai?

It depends on the confirmed fault. A cabin filter is a low-cost consumable; a rear evaporator clean is modest labour; a rear actuator or blower is part-plus-labour. A/C gas filling with leak check is ₹1,500 (single module) or ₹2,200 (double module). We quote the exact figure after diagnosis, before starting work.

Is weak rear airflow the same problem as weak rear cooling?

No. Weak airflow at all fan speeds points to the rear blower, its resistor or a clogged cabin filter. Strong airflow that stays warm points to the rear controls or refrigerant. We check which it is before quoting, because they are different repairs.

Do you service Innova Crysta and older Innova models?

Yes. We service the older Innova and the Innova Crysta for rear-AC faults, gas filling, blower and electrical issues. Walk in Monday–Saturday, 10 AM – 8 PM, or call +91 8428000085 with your model and year for an estimate.

Frequently asked questions

Does this symptom need inspection?

Yes. The listed causes are possibilities; a technician should inspect the vehicle before confirming a fault or quote.

Can a repair be quoted from a symptom alone?

No. The final scope and cost depend on diagnosis, vehicle condition and approved parts.
